Serbia: Food Safety – Do we have to pay that much for the safe food?

The rule of law is a cornerstone of every well-functioning society. It means that public authorities can act only within powers clearly defined and limited by law.

Yet in Serbia, an important issue has remained largely unaddressed for years: the costs of official food control procedures conducted under the authority of the Ministry of Health. The regulation of these costs has been left in a legal and institutional grey area. Worryingly, early signals suggest that the new Law on Official Controls may not resolve this long-standing problem.

This article written by Ivan Milošević and Janez Vončina, Partners in the JPM Belgrade office, seeks to open the discussion and shed light on a matter that deserves far greater legal and professional attention.
